Bonnet Island and its lighthouse
Bonnet Island lighthouse at Macquarie Heads is one of two lighthouses that stand as functioning beacons to all watercraft which venture into Macquarie Heads to gain access to Strahan and the Gordon River. The other one is the Entrance Island Lighthouse. I have trouble trying to decide which lighthouse looks prettier – and at the end of the day, you realise that they are like a pair of cuff-links – they are incomplete without the other.
Access to these two lighthouses is best gained by boat. Consider boarding an early morning cruise to take you up the Gordon River. While both these two lighthouses are visible from Macquarie Heads, they are so far off into the heads that they appear to be not much larger than the size of one”s fingernails at the end of their extended arm when viewed with the naked eye.
